FRANKFURT
Kleinmarkthalle
It’s certainly not the prettiest of buildings, especially when compared to its glory days towards the end of the nineteenth century, when the Kleinmarkthalle was renowned for the glories of its iron and glass construction. But this was destroyed in the Second World War and replaced by a resolutely utilitarian affair. Still, it’s what’s inside that counts and this is a fine market, with more than 60 stalls, selling the very best of German produce. And the rest. It’s open every day until 6 pm (4 pm on Saturdays), flogging everything from the classic wurst (there are three stalls dedicated to this great German sausage, in its every form), wild boar and suckling pig, to German breads and pastries, wild mushrooms, asparagus (in season) and a good range of Asian foods and spices too. You can also grab a hot Gelbwurst (a Frankfurt speciality) to snack on while you shop. And fish too, hauled from the water mere moments before and cooked before your eyes. If you’re in Frankfurt and want a taste of the real city, look no further than here.

Kronberger
Often described as Frankfurt’s best bakery, Kronberger certainly does things in the old-fashioned way. It’s still family owned and everything is baked on the premises, rather than made elsewhere and simply finished off on site. Locals rave about the poppy seed rolls and real German bread (with that all-important thick crust), as well as the ever-changing array of walnut and fig breads, cheesecakes, Black Forest gateaux, croissants, pastries and chocolate cream cakes. Queues often stretch 50 metres down the road, especially on the eve of holidays. Staff can be brusque, but who really cares when the baking this fine. Even the baguettes, Gallic to their core, are as good, if not better, than many you’d find in Paris. A proper German bakery, well worth any wait.

Fischhaus Ohrmann
The Ohrmanns have been in the fish business a long time; it‘s nearly 90 years since they first opened a processing plant in Brandenburg, so they know a thing about all things piscine. Fischhaus Ohrmann is their most recent shop, serving some of the freshest fish in Germany. They have a mean range of traditionally smoked beauties too, including conger eel, herring and halibut. There’s also lobster and scallop soups to take away, as well as sandwiches filled with the likes of matie (baby herring), crab and fish cakes. The restaurant is pretty good, with endless ways of serving herring, fresh and smoked fish, and in the summer there’s an outdoor terrace. If you tire of wurst, then Fischhaus Ohrmann offers gloriously fresh and fishy relief.
