DUBLIN
Temple Bar Market

Fight through Temple Bar, with its endless hordes of hungover stags and hens, and escape into the edible Gallic paradise that is Temple Bar Market. It takes place every Saturday from 10 am until 4.30, without fail, and celebrates local Irish food. And when the produce is this magnificent, they’d be mad not to shout about it. Fresh native oysters from St Martin Shellfish, apples, cider and cider brandies from Llewellyn’s Orchard Produce, first class sausages from J Hick & Sons and some mighty fine beef and lamb from J & V Farm Meats. And it’s not just food from the Emerald Isle, but tastes from around the globe too. Karuna’s Kitchen does incredible things with Indian vegetarian food (her samosas, koftas and croquettes are crisp but never greasy) while Sabores de Mexico serves up some of the finest regional Mexican food this side of Tulum.

Sheridans Cheesemongers

The disadvantages of Ireland’s rather damp climate are obvious: rain, rain and yet more rain. Yet all those downpours mean thick, lush grass, which, in turn, means some of the richest, sweetest milk in the world. And, with the help of artisans across the land, this is transformed into a profusion of fine cheese – which is what Sheridans are all about. They started as a market stall, selling local farmhouse cheese at Galway Market. But the business was soon so successful that it grew into four shops, as well as eleven market stalls and a huge warehouse. And you’ll find all the greatest hits of Irish cheese here; from Adrahan to Wicklow Blue, all kept in perfect condition and sold at the very peak of their allure. There’s also a good range of cheese from England, France, Italy and Switzerland, as well as wedding cheese cakes and hampers.

Fallon & Byrne

Restaurant, food hall and wine bar – Fallon & Byrne, a new and rather upmarket addition to Dublin’s gastro-scene, promises much. But does it deliver? Well, there’s no arguing with the provenance of their stock. There’s properly hung Irish Angus beef and home-baked hams, as well as organic salmon from Clare Island (among the best and most sustainable in the world), oysters from Carlingford Lough, and cod and John Dory from Castletownbere. There’s a good selection of seasonal game too, together with Frank Hederman’s wonderful beech-smoked salmon and all manner of excellent Irish cheeses. Alongside a very well stocked cellar, where endless tastings and courses are offered, there’s also a massive range of takeaway wines. All this in a light, bright and airy space, with exposed iron columns and rustic brick walls. They say this is the best grocer in Ireland – they might well be right.
